Several months ago I had the urge to paint car parts. I don't always like painting backgrounds and automotive paint has been applied in a myriad of colors. This seemed like the answer to my problem. I could use the metallic paint, flat paint, clear coat, blemishes, unique shapes, and compact size of fuel doors as a canvas and background for artwork.
Last summer I painted this picture of Ol' Calhoun, Parnelli Jones' 1963 Indy 500 winning car. I wanted a checkered flag background but it needed more detail. Strips of rug binding were primed black and white then woven over stretcher bars. This acrylic painting was a done as a gift and the weaving (among many other aspects) represented the recipients well.
